An open letter to Apple on the matter of ThinkSecret.com

Mr. Jobs,

I’m not sure I understand your companies reasoning behind suing ThinkSecret.com out of existence. I do most of my work work on a PC as I’m a developer who works a lot with Microsoft’s web technologies, but I’ve had a Mac laptop in the past and I’m thinking once again of returning to a Mac in the very new future. Your company (along with the market of new web technologies) has done a great job in closing the gap on what can be done in the world of professional web development on a Mac and a PC and that is a great thing. I work in front end technologies and love good design and I’m constantly jealous of those who get to work on a Mac (the designers in the case of my company.) I’ve been looking forward for months now to the rumored light weight MacBook that you may be announcing in January.

I understand that you want everything to be a surprise. It helps give you time to develop a quality product before the competition can start in on their copy, it doesn’t slow sales of the old product and frankly it’s just more fun to announce stuff when no one knows about it.

But the reality is that your many, many supply chains cause some leaks and this information gets out there. And your most die hard customers want to know all the secrets they can. That’s amazing. There aren’t other companies where people care this much. No one wakes up in the morning and goes to CokeSecrets.com to see if their are any new flavors of Coke coming out in the future.

You’ve created a culture that revolves around your company and your lawyers are killing it. Please reconsider your choice and your future actions. My reservations about buying this brand new Mac are now growing. Not because I’ve heard rumors that make me not want to buy this new product, quite the opposite actually, but because I don’t want to build a relationship with a company that I can see clearly has it out for their biggest fans.

Sincerely,

Andy Dietler
